Medical situation for Jalen Hurts

The Philadelphia Eagles are dealing with a major setback as quarterback Jalen Hurts remains sidelined indefinitely due to a superficial blood clot. The team is not currently planning to place him on injured reserve, which would keep him out for a minimum of four weeks.

Hurts and the organization are gathering more information and seeking additional medical opinions. The blood clot is considered treatable. The ultimate choice on when he returns will be made by his medical team, and the Eagles plan to follow his lead.

Blood clots are normally treated with blood thinners, and players cannot play while taking them. A moderate dose usually requires at least six weeks of treatment. If a clot moves, which occurred in Hurts' case, blood thinners are frequently required. If the condition worsens, treatment could last about three months.

Quarterback changes and injury list

With Hurts ruled out for Sunday's game against Carolina, the Eagles are reshaping their roster. Backup Tanner McKee will start against the Panthers, while rookie Cole Payton moves up as the backup.

Philadelphia also signed quarterback Joe Milton from the Dallas practice squad. Under league rules, Milton must remain on the roster for three weeks.

This issue adds to a difficult period for Philadelphia. Running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver DeVonta Smith have both suffered hamstring injuries. Barkley is ruled out for Sunday, though a return next week is seen as realistic. The team also recently saw offensive tackle Lane Johnson retire and traded center Cam Jurgens.
