A Massive Roster Shake-Up
The Philadelphia 76ers completely changed their roster this offseason. It started on July 1 when they traded Paul George, two first-round picks from 2028 and 2031, and two second-round picks from 2028 and 2030 to the Boston Celtics. In return, they received Finals MVP Jaylen Brown.
Later in July, they signed 41-year-old LeBron James. James agreed to a two-year contract worth 8 million dollars. This is a major pay cut from the nearly 53 million dollars he made last season with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The team also brought in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons, and Labaron Philon Jr. Meanwhile, key players like Andre Drummond, Quentin Grimes, and Kelly Oubre Jr. left the team.
Front Office Changes and New Chemistry
These roster moves follow big changes in the front office. The 76ers parted ways with general manager Daryl Morey in May. Jameer Nelson was promoted to executive vice president of basketball operations, working under the new president Mike Gansey.
The new-look roster brings big questions about how the players will fit together. Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid are both high-usage scorers who like to play in the midrange. The team also has Tyrese Maxey and rising star VJ Edgecombe in the backcourt, meaning there are many players who need the ball.
Writer Ben Golliver noted that Brown is younger and healthier than George, making him a strong fit. However, Golliver also said that Brown "makes more sense for Philadelphia's post-Embiid future than he does as an Embiid sidekick."
Managing Player Health and the Playoffs
Health will be a major factor for Philadelphia this season. Joel Embiid is 32 years old and will turn 33 during the season. He has struggled with injuries, appearing in only 39 percent of games over the last three seasons. He also missed four of the team's 11 playoff games last year.
Because of Embiid's health issues, backup centers Adem Bona and Ariel Hukporti will be very important. They need to keep the team competitive in the Eastern Conference when Embiid is resting or injured.
LeBron James has played an average of 67 games over the last three seasons. If the stars can stay healthy, the 76ers have a real chance to compete for a championship.
