Penix injury update

Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will start Sunday against the Chicago Bears if he avoids setbacks during the training week. Coach Kevin Stefanski shared the update on Wednesday, noting that Penix would practice in a limited capacity.

Penix took a heavy hit late in the fourth quarter during Sunday night's loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He returned for one play, but Tua Tagovailoa stepped in at quarterback when the tie game reached overtime. The Ravens scored a touchdown on their opening drive in extra time, and Tagovailoa threw a game-ending interception.

Medical checks and recovery

Penix underwent medical imaging earlier in the week. Stefanski declined to share specific details about the extent of the rib injury, but mentioned that the quarterback is feeling better.

Stefanski explained that practice participation depends entirely on how Penix feels moving around. The coach added that snap shares could range from all, some, to none depending on the daily progress.

Return to the lineup

Penix, 26, recently returned to the Atlanta lineup in Week 3 following left ACL surgery last November. Without Penix and Tagovailoa, who dealt with an oblique injury early in the season, the Atlanta offense managed just 16 points over two games under third-stringer Cooper Rush.

Penix returned for the following two weeks, helping the Falcons crush the Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints on the road. The team scored a combined 80 points during those two matchups, leading the league in scoring over that stretch.
