Martinez Demands Solution to Avoid Lockout

Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez has issued a direct plea to Major League Baseball owners and players. He wants both sides to reach a new deal before the current collective bargaining agreement expires on Dec. 1.

Attending the tenth annual gala for the Pedro Martinez Foundation in Boston, the former pitcher voiced strong frustration about the situation. He urged both sides to find a sensible way forward to protect the supporters of the sport.

Martinez stated that he feels for the fans and noted that baseball is in a good place right now. He appealed to everyone involved to stop delaying, get an agreement completed, and keep the game running for the fans.

Cap Talks Cause Major Stoppage Threat

The core of the dispute involves the collective bargaining agreement that ends on Dec. 1. MLB owners are attempting to put a salary cap in place across the league.

The latest offer from the owners, delivered on Tuesday, suggested delaying the salary cap until 2028. However, the players union has stayed firm in refusing to discuss any form of a salary cap during these negotiations.

Lessons From the 1994 Season Stoppage

Martinez knows firsthand how damaging a labor stoppage can be. During the 1994 strike, he was playing his first season with the Montreal Expos.

The Expos held the best record in the majors at 74-40 and had real hopes of winning a World Series title when play was halted. The eventual cancellation of the rest of the 1994 season ended those dreams.

The stoppage also affected Martinez personally, leaving him just one day short of arbitration eligibility. He explained that he was one of the most punished players at that moment because he had talent but was forced to wait for arbitration to make his money.

Protecting Supporters of the Game

Looking back at 1994, Martinez explained that structural changes were necessary back then and eventually helped the sport. However, he insisted that there is no excuse for a lockout during the current negotiations.

He stated that neither the players union, the owners, nor baseball itself should allow fans to be mistreated. He hopes both the commissioner and the players association listen to his experience.

Martinez enjoyed a remarkable career in baseball. He won three Cy Young Awards, was named an All Star eight times, and won the 2004 World Series with the Boston Red Sox before entering the Hall of Fame in 2015.
