Gabe Jacas Steps Up
The New England Patriots are heading into their next game with some major injury issues, but rookie outside linebacker Gabe Jacas is ready to step up. The 22 year old second round pick from Illinois is set to start against the Jacksonville Jaguars because starting outside linebacker Dre'Mont Jones is dealing with a shoulder injury.
Jacas has already made a quick impact this season. He played 19 snaps in the season opening loss to Seattle and saw his playing time jump to 49 snaps last week against the Steelers. He even intercepted Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, breaking the quarterback's long streak without an interception. Coach Mike Vrabel praised Jacas for his hustle and his ability to take coaching.
Overcoming a Slow Start and Injuries
It has not been an easy road for the rookie. Jacas missed the entire spring after having a knee procedure, which delayed his contract signing until training camp. He struggled with positioning in the preseason but has adjusted quickly to the regular season game plans. Outside linebackers coach Mike Smith described Jacas as being meaner than a wet mule.
The Patriots need Jacas to perform well because their injury list is growing rapidly. New England has already placed 16 players on injured reserve during this league year. This includes starting right guard Mike Onwenu, who broke his right ankle, reserve safety Dell Pettus, and outside linebacker Quintayvious Hutchins. Greg Van Roten is expected to start at right guard on Sunday.
Maye and the Offense Look to Improve
On the offensive side, rookie quarterback Drake Maye is still adjusting to NFL defenses. Opponents have been testing his patience with deep coverage schemes. Maye threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter of the season opener but showed better composure last week against the Steelers.
To help Maye, the Patriots need better protection up front. Center Jared Wilson is looking to bounce back after a tough performance last week. Coach Vrabel noted that Wilson can protect better and has shown that capability in the past.
