A Rough Start for the Champs
The New England Patriots are in a difficult spot. After a 35-6 blowout loss to the Jaguars, the defending AFC champions sit with just one win and two losses. At the center of these struggles is quarterback Drake Maye, who committed three turnovers in the latest defeat. Maye has thrown six interceptions and lost a fumble so far this season.
The Patriots offense is currently the worst in the NFL, averaging just 9.7 points per game. Maye called the unit's performance "unacceptable" and promised to look in the mirror. Head coach Mike Vrabel is urging his quarterback to relax. Vrabel used a golf analogy, saying the team is squeezing the club too tight and trying to force plays that are not there.
Injuries and Pressure Mounting
It is not all on Maye. The Patriots are dealing with major injuries to key players. Star receiver A.J. Brown is on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain and will miss at least the next two games. Without Brown, Maye has struggled to connect with his wideouts, throwing five interceptions and zero touchdowns when targeting them.
Protection has also fallen apart. The offensive line lost starting right guard Mike Onwenu to a broken ankle, and his backup Greg Van Roten left Sunday's game with a thigh injury. Maye was pressured on 47% of his dropbacks against the Jaguars. He has been pressured on 41.4% of his plays this season, making it hard to find any rhythm.
Defenses Finding the Blueprint
Opposing defenses have changed how they play against Maye. Last season, he faced zone coverage on 51% of his dropbacks, but that has jumped to 65% this season. Teams are using deep safeties to limit big plays, forcing Maye to work against coverages he has struggled to break down.
Despite the slow start, Vrabel says he has no plans to bench Maye. The team must find answers quickly. If they lose their next games against the Bills and the Raiders, they will match their total loss count from the entire 2025 season.
