A Costly Touchdown
The New England Patriots welcomed back receiver A.J. Brown on Sunday, but they lost their other top receiver, Romeo Doubs, to a shoulder injury.
Doubs left the game against the New York Jets after diving to haul in a 42-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Drake Maye with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter.
Hard Landing
Doubs landed hard on his shoulder on the play after reaching a top speed of 21.44 mph to track down Maye, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. That was the fastest speed he has reached as the ball carrier in his five-year career.
He was initially announced as questionable to return before the team ruled him out early in the third quarter. The Patriots signed him to a four-year, $68 million deal in March as one of their top free agent targets.
More Injuries Pile Up
In addition to Doubs, the Patriots announced that starting left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker injured his hamstring in the second quarter and later was ruled out.
Starting right tackle Morgan Moses also left the game in the second quarter due to an ankle injury. After initially being announced as questionable to return, he was downgraded to out at the start of the fourth quarter.
