Patriots shut down Kincaid

The New England Patriots pulled off an upset on Sunday to bring their record to 2-2 and get back in the race. A big reason for the victory was how they handled Buffalo Bills tight end Dalton Kincaid. Before the game, Kincaid led all NFL players at his position with 263 receiving yards, which included six plays of 20 yards or more. The Patriots defense held him to just one catch for seven yards.

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said his players showed great awareness on the field. They mixed zone and man coverage to keep Kincaid from running free. On the third play of the game, safety Kevin Byard knocked the ball away to force a punt. Later, linebacker Dre'Mont Jones jammed Kincaid at the line of scrimmage to disrupt his route, while linebacker Robert Spillane stopped a deep over route in the fourth quarter. The Bills also helped by limiting Kincaid to 17 pass routes.

A tough test against the Raiders

This Sunday, the Patriots face a new test when the 3-1 Las Vegas Raiders visit Gillette Stadium. The Raiders have been a surprise team this season, and a major part of their winning formula comes from feeding their tight ends, Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer.

Vrabel knows it will not be easy. He called Bowers as elite as they come at the position and said it will be a huge challenge. Bowers has 192 career receptions, passing Jason Witten for the most catches by a tight end under the age of 24 in NFL history. He also reached 2,000 career receiving yards in just 31 games, tying Kellen Winslow Sr. for the second-fastest in league history behind Mike Ditka. Whether the Patriots use a similar game plan or dedicate a specific defender to Bowers is a major storyline for the game.
