Parkinson guides Wrexham to important victory

Phil Parkinson was delighted with how his Wrexham team responded as a 4-1 victory against Preston eased the pressure on the manager. Wrexham entered the match after a difficult week. Steven Gerrard was linked with the club after a 2-1 home defeat to West Brom left Wrexham near the bottom of the table.

The supporters gave Parkinson a big show of support before kickoff. The manager appreciated the backing, and his players took out their frustrations on Preston to move Wrexham up to 14th place. Parkinson said after the game that the players stood up and were counted individually and collectively.

How Wrexham secured the points

Joe Worrall opened the scoring for Wrexham, finding the net for his first goal in two years. Alfie Devine equalised for Preston, but former Preston midfielder Ben Whiteman scored against his old club to restore the lead. Sam Smith and Kieffer Moore then added two quick goals either side of the hour mark to complete the win.

Parkinson praised the character shown by his squad after working on details in Thursday training. The Wrexham boss, who has managed over 1000 games, mentioned that defeats hurt as much as his first defeat as Colchester manager, but said the team rose to the challenge.

Preston remain bottom of the table

The defeat leaves Preston rock bottom of the Championship. The team has failed to collect a point since Graham Alexander took charge during the international break.

Preston have now conceded four goals in back to back matches. This result follows a 4-0 defeat against Birmingham on Tuesday.
