A Homecoming to Remember

Cleveland Guardians left-hander Parker Messick is set to start Game 2 of the ALCS against the Rays on Tuesday. The announcement came from the team on Monday.

Messick is 25 years old and grew up in the Tampa Bay area. He attended high school about 45 minutes away from Tropicana Field, where he watched games as a child.

Familiar Territory

Messick has fond memories of the venue. He attended a game during the 2008 World Series and even took laps around the field with his Little League All-Star banners.

He has already pitched twice in front of hometown friends and family during his career. Last season, he beat the Rays while giving up just one run over six innings. He also allowed only one run over 7⅔ innings in late July.

Manager Confidence

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt spoke about the pitcher. Vogt noted that Messick has recorded two straight very good starts at the venue in front of family and friends.

Messick stated that ticket requests will not be too high because his hometown is hosting a watch party. His former high school also produced major leaguers Pete Alonso and Kyle Tucker.

The Opponent on the Mound

Right-hander Freddy Peralta will oppose Messick for the Rays. Peralta arrived as a midseason acquisition and put together a stellar September, going 4-0 with a 0.96 ERA over five starts.

Rays manager Kevin Cash also noted that veteran Nick Martinez is expected to start Game 3 on Thursday.
