Major boosts for the lineup

The Carolina Panthers received a massive lift ahead of their Week 6 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. The team announced on Saturday that right tackle Taylor Moton, defensive end Tershawn Wharton, and running back Trevor Etienne were all activated. Because the team had three openings on the 53-man roster, no corresponding moves were needed.

Moton missed all of training camp, the preseason, and the first four games of the regular season due to a blood clot in his lung. He was a full participant in practice all week and received a questionable designation on Friday. Rookie first-round pick Monroe Freeling started the first four games in his place, but Freeling suffered a knee injury in the Week 4 win over the Detroit Lions and is doubtful to play.

Wharton has also returned after dealing with a neck injury that required surgery following organized team activities. The veteran defensive lineman signed a three-year deal last offseason and has only played nine games for the franchise. Like Moton, Wharton was a full participant in practice all week and is expected to rotate with other linemen against Philadelphia.

Etienne returns to the backfield

Running back Trevor Etienne is officially back on the active roster after missing the start of the season on the injured reserve list. Etienne injured his ankle during the preseason finale against the Houston Texans in August. Coach Canales confirmed his return late in the week, noting the player was a full participant in workouts.

With fellow running back AJ Dillon ruled out due to an ankle injury, Etienne provides much needed depth. He is expected to back up starting running back Chuba Hubbard in the backfield. Etienne is also slated to resume his role as the primary option for kick and punt returns on special teams.

To add more depth for Sunday, the team also elevated running back Anthony Tyus III and cornerback Robert Rochell from the practice squad to the game-day roster. The Panthers are still monitoring the recovery statuses of other players, including Jaelan Phillips and Damien Lewis, who were both listed as questionable on the final injury report.
