Padres Face Elimination Without Closer Mason Miller

The San Diego Padres are fighting to keep their season alive in Game 3 of the National League Division Series, but they must do it without their star closer. Mason Miller has been placed on the paternity list just 45 minutes before the first pitch against the Milwaukee Brewers. Miller left the team as his wife was expecting the couple's first child.

Left handed reliever Wandy Peralta has been called up to replace Miller on the roster. The Padres are currently trailing 2-0 in the best of five series. This means they must win on Tuesday night to force a Game 4, where Miller would be eligible to return.

Tough Recent Outing and Backup Plans

Miller last played on Sunday night in a difficult appearance. He entered the ninth inning with a one run lead but walked the bases loaded. He then gave up a two out, game winning single to Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio. Miller threw 40 pitches and recorded six outs, which is only the third time he has done that this season.

Despite that tough game, the Padres would have likely called on Miller for any save situation in Game 3. With him out, Padres manager Craig Stammen has had to adjust his plans. Stammen announced that Michael King, who is scheduled to start a potential Game 5, will be in the bullpen on Tuesday and could pitch if the right situation arises. Under Major League Baseball rules, players can spend a maximum of three days on the paternity list.
