Packers Move for Veteran Guard
The Green Bay Packers have made a move to fix their struggling offensive line. The team has signed veteran guard Laken Tomlinson off the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.
Tomlinson is 34 years old and brings a lot of experience to Green Bay. He was a first round pick in the 2015 draft by the Detroit Lions. Over his career, he has played in 173 games. He has had stints with the Lions, 49ers, Jets, Seahawks and Texans. He also earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2021 during his time with San Francisco. However, he has not played in a game since Week 17 of last season.
Injury Crisis in Green Bay
Green Bay has faced serious issues on their offensive line this season. The team has a 1-2 record and has already used three different players at left guard in just three games.
Aaron Banks is the preferred starter at left guard, but he has only played in one game because of toe and knee injuries. On the right side of the line, first year starter Jacob Monk has found things difficult. To make matters worse, starting right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele suffered a knee injury in Week 2 that ended his season.
Protection Problems for Jordan Love
This weak offensive line has left quarterback Jordan Love exposed. Love has faced heavy pressure in his games so far. The Minnesota Vikings hit him 15 times in Week 1. In Thursday's loss against the Atlanta Falcons, he was hit another 12 times.
The team has a pass block win rate of just 16% through three games. This is the worst recorded figure for any team through the first three weeks since this statistic was first tracked in 2017.
Running Game Struggles
The blocking issues have also hurt the Packers running game. Green Bay managed only 17 rushing yards in their recent game against the Falcons.
Currently, the Packers are averaging 48.7 rushing yards per game. This is the worst average in the league. The team hopes that adding an experienced player like Tomlinson will help stabilize the line and give their offense some space to breathe.
