A massive blow for the Packers
The Green Bay Packers have suffered a major setback on their offensive line. Right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele is out for the rest of the season. He needs surgery to repair a completely torn patellar tendon in his right knee.
This is the second year in a row that Bako-Bewele has seen his season cut short by a knee injury. Last year, a partial tear ended his campaign in Week 15. This latest injury happened during Sunday's overtime victory against the New York Jets.
Bako-Bewele is widely seen as the best offensive lineman on the team. The 2022 fourth round pick signed a four year, 88 million dollar contract extension in 2025. He is scheduled for surgery on Thursday and faces a recovery period of eight to ten months.
When asked about the injury, Bako-Bewele mentioned the playing surface. "I don't think the turf helped," he said, referring to MetLife Stadium.
More injury trouble upfront
The Packers are facing a real crisis on their offensive line. Along with Bako-Bewele, left guard Aaron Banks left Sunday's game with toe and knee injuries. His replacement, Donovan Jennings, then went down with a hand injury.
Rookie Jager Burton had to finish the game at left guard. At one point, right guard Jacob Monk was evaluated for a stinger. Things got so bad that the team was preparing to play tight end Tucker Kraft on the offensive line.
These injuries come at a bad time for Green Bay. The team is already struggling to run the ball. They currently rank last in rushing yards per game with just 64.5, and 29th in yards per carry at 3.3.
To make matters worse, receiver Jayden Reed is dealing with a back injury. Reed was kept in New Jersey for observation after Sunday's game before returning to Green Bay on Monday. It remains unclear if he will miss any games.
