A Historic Low For The Running Game
The Green Bay Packers are facing a very tough start to the season. After a disappointing 35-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in their home opener, the team sits at a 1-2 record. This is the worst start in coach Matt LaFleur's eight seasons with the franchise. The fans at Lambeau Field made their feelings clear by booing the players off the field.
The biggest issue on Thursday night was the running game. The Packers managed only 17 rushing yards during the entire game. That is tied for the third fewest rushing yards by the team in over 90 years. Meanwhile, Falcons running back Bijan Robinson ran for 194 yards. That is more than the Packers have rushed for as a team all season.
LaFleur Admits Offensive Struggles
Coach LaFleur admitted that he does not know what his team is good at right now. "I think we gotta continue to work with these guys and try to figure out what we do well," LaFleur said. "Because right now I don't know what we're doing well offensively."
The team is currently missing Josh Jacobs, their leading rusher from the past two seasons, who is on the commissioner exempt list. The Packers are averaging just 48.7 rushing yards per game this season. Running back MarShawn Lloyd expressed his frustration, saying he believes they can run well but they are simply not doing it yet.
Protection Issues And Fan Frustration
Quarterback Jordan Love faced constant pressure throughout the game. The offensive line has struggled with injuries, including a season-ending knee injury to right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele in Week 2. Against the Falcons, Love was hit 12 times, though he was only sacked once. He finished the game with 28 completions on 53 attempts for 312 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
Tight end Tucker Kraft expressed disappointment at the crowd's reaction, saying he does not picture boos at Lambeau Field. However, wide receiver Christian Watson, who had seven catches for 96 yards and a touchdown, said he understood the fans. Watson noted that they must put a better product on the field to get the fans behind them.
