Early Lead And Altrincham Fight Back
Notts County earned a hard fought victory in the FA Cup first round, beating Altrincham 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw following 120 minutes of football. The game took place under remarkably foggy conditions that grew worse as the match went on.
County came into the match unbeaten in three games and started with strong energy. They took the lead in the 28th minute. Callum Roberts delivered an excellent cross to the back post, where Jacob Bedeau connected to put the away side ahead.
Hosts Turn The Game Around
Altrincham sit seventh in the fifth tier and showed great determination to fight back. Lucas Weaver first dragged a shot wide after a surging run. He then scored an equaliser six minutes before half time. Matty Kosylo supplied a superb through ball to Weaver, who cut inside and fired a low shot into the net. Replays suggested Weaver might have been offside, but the goal stood.
The hosts pushed forward again after the break. Kosylo set up another opportunity just before the hour mark with an impressive pass. Lewis Banks saw his initial effort saved, but he followed up quickly to tap the ball home and give Altrincham a 2-1 lead.
Late Equaliser In Heavy Fog
Altrincham have famously beaten 17 Football League teams in their history, and they looked close to another major win. However, Callum Roberts ruined their plans in the 84th minute. He struck the ball first time into the net to make it 2-2 and force extra time.
Heavy fog descended over the pitch, creating severe visibility issues. The referees allowed the game to continue despite the weather conditions. Neither side could find a winning goal during the extra 30 minutes, which sent the match to penalties.
Shootout Victory For Notts County
Altrincham were let down by poor finishing from the spot when the penalty shootout began. Aidan Barlow, Sam Taylor, and Eddy Jones all missed their penalty kicks for the home team.
Rosaire Longelo stepped up for Notts County and slotted home the decisive kick. That goal sealed a 3-2 penalty victory for County, ending Altrincham hopes of another famous cup upset.
