Another Disappointment for Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Phillies saw their season end on Thursday night with a 6-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves in Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series. For a team with championship hopes, it was a painful finish.

Star slugger Bryce Harper did not make any excuses for the early exit. "You're here to do business. You're here to win games, and we didn't do that," Harper said in the quiet clubhouse after the game.

The defeat marks the fifth year in a row that the Phillies have been knocked out of the postseason. Despite having a strong core of players, including Harper, Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto, Zack Wheeler, and Aaron Nola, they have not won a World Series since 2008.

Early Trouble on the Mound

The deciding game got off to a rough start for the Phillies. Michael Harris II hit a three-run home run off Aaron Nola in the very first inning. That early blow put Philadelphia in a hole they could not climb out of.

Meanwhile, the Braves got great pitching. Ray Kerr made his first career postseason appearance as an opener, throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings before handing the ball to Grant Holmes.

This loss continues a downward trend for the Phillies. After reaching the World Series in 2022, they lost in the National League Championship Series in 2023, followed by Division Series exits, and now a Wild Card exit.

Interim manager Don Mattingly, who took over in April after Rob Thomson was fired, did not want to talk about his future. He said he loved being in Philadelphia but wants what is best for the organization.
