Jokic hits career milestone
Nikola Jokic had 21 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists on Wednesday night as the Denver Nuggets beat the winless New Orleans Pelicans 104-91. The Denver center never trailed in the game as he recorded his 200th career regular season triple double.
Jokic is now just 10 triple doubles away from passing retired leader Russell Westbrook. Westbrook reached 200 in 1,175 games, while Jokic achieved the mark in 814. They remain the only two players in NBA history to cross 200. Sixteen of Jokic's triple doubles have come against New Orleans, which is six more than against any other team.
Strong start secures Denver win
Denver swept the two game home and home series with New Orleans. Jamal Murray led Denver with 23 points, while Aaron Gordon added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Murray hit his first three shots from deep as Denver shot 62% in the opening quarter to build a 37-18 lead. Marvin Bagley put Denver ahead 44-22 in the second quarter for their largest lead of the night.
Zion Williamson scored 25 points for New Orleans and cut the lead to 88-83 with a fourth quarter 3 pointer. Murray answered with a 3 pointer and a driving finger roll to push the lead back to 10 points. New Orleans struggled from deep, making just 7 of 30 3 point attempts. The Pelicans are now 0-4 under first year coach Jamahl Mosley.
Squad depth tested by injuries
Denver fielded only nine players due to multiple injuries. Cam Johnson missed out with an ankle issue, and Alpha Diallo sat out with a sprained wrist. Julian Strawther and Spencer Jones also remained unavailable.
Despite the short rotation, Christian Braun scored 15 points and Trevon Brazile added 11. For New Orleans, Derik Queen finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Jeremiah Fears chipped in 11 points.
