How James Will Lead the Offense

Philadelphia 76ers coach Nick Nurse has shared his plans for LeBron James. On the third day of training camp, Nurse began introducing his offensive schemes. He wants James to be a creator rather than just a scorer.

Nurse said he considers James a great offense creator and a table setter. The team discussed playing the 24 year veteran at point forward during the offseason. James will have the ball in his hands a lot, but he will not be the only player running the transition.

Finding the Right Spacing

The coach wants his team to secure rebounds and push the ball up the floor quickly. Along with James, players like Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and VJ Edgecombe will be expected to lead these fastbreak opportunities. Nurse wants his players to focus on defense to create these quick scoring chances.

When the game slows down into a half court offense, spacing will be key. James, Brown, and Joel Embiid can all play in the post. This can make the court crowded if they do not find the right balance. Brown explained that the team is still figuring out the spacing and when to put pressure on the rim. Brown has been practicing passing out of double teams to find open teammates on the three point line. He noted that playing alongside a stretch five like Embiid fits his style of play well.

Collaboration and Preseason Preparation

Nurse is also focusing on a collaborative coaching style. He wants to hear thoughts and ideas from his players. Before a recent practice, he spoke with five of his players, including James, to get their input.

The team has only a few practices left before they face real opposition. Their preseason opener is on Monday against the New York Knicks.
