League backs medical team
NFL officials defended the medical process involving Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and his recent health issues. Speaking at the owners meetings in New York, NFL chief medical officer Allen Sills addressed reporters in a media availability on Tuesday. Sills defended the team after doctors discovered multiple blood clots in the quarterback's lungs.
The league stated it will not punish the Eagles for how they handled Hurts. Sills called the team treatment of Hurts very conservative, very patient-focused and appropriately guarded in every step. He added that the notion of external factors pushing physicians to put a player in harm is nonsense.
Response to public criticism
Hurts was cleared to play before Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. Days after the game, doctors found blood clots in his lungs. Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season and will undergo treatment involving blood thinners for around three months. His agent Nicole Lynn and the team released a statement detailing the condition.
Jeff Miller, NFL executive vice president overseeing player health and safety, called speculation about the team allowing Hurts to play in London unfounded. Sills also criticized doctors speculating online without all the data, calling such actions unprofessional and unethical.
