Preparing for Paris

The NFL is bringing a mini Super Bowl vibe to Paris this week for its first regular season game in France. Authorities are considering curfews following civil unrest and security concerns in the city, but the league says preparations are on schedule. An NFL House will open later in the week with fan activities.

The New Orleans Saints arrived in Paris on Monday morning after beating the Giants 34-27 on Sunday. Coach Kellen Moore said his players are looking forward to the setup. The Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints will play at Stade de France on Sunday. Brett Gosper, the head of Europe and Asia-Pacific for the league, said the French market has been of high interest for some time.

Local Star Power and Rugby Links

The league teamed up with Paris Saint-Germain and French stars like Kylian Mbappe and rugby player Antoine Dupont to promote the fixture. Soccer club PSG announced a partnership with the NFL on two distinct game jerseys. Saints players were also invited to PSG against Barcelona on Tuesday night.

Gosper noted that rugby plays a role in helping fans understand the sport. France rugby star Antoine Dupont will be at Sunday match. Dupont previously spent a day at the training facility of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Ticket Sales and TV Coverage

Gosper estimated that around 20 percent of attendees will be inbound from the United States. Local fans bought 70 percent of the tickets, and the remaining 10 percent are from elsewhere in Europe. Gosper stated that the stadium is full.

State-owned France Televisions is covering Sunday match as a major national event with a big free-to-air audience. Sports daily L'Equipe also has a free-to-air broadcast and published an NFL supplement. The league wants to attract new fans and push higher into the country TV viewership preferences.
