Joint review launched

The NFL and the NFL Players Association have started a joint review into how Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was treated for a blood clot. The league and players union released a joint statement on Sunday confirming the move after the union requested an investigation.

Hurts is currently on injured reserve and is expected to miss the rest of the season. A blood clot in his left calf moved to his lungs. The Eagles and his agent Nicole Lynn stated that he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. His treatment involves blood thinners, and he cannot take part in any football activities until he is off them.

Timeline of the medical care

The Eagles said Hurts suffered an injury after taking a cleat to his calf area on Oct. 4 in a game against the Los Angeles Rams. He informed the team medical staff of the injury after practice on Oct. 8.

The Super Bowl LIX MVP trained the next day before traveling to London to play the Jacksonville Jaguars. Specialists in London initially diagnosed him with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis, but he was cleared to play against Jacksonville on Oct. 11.

League defense of Eagles staff

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said on Wednesday that the league welcomed an investigation. His statement came after Dr. Allen Sills, the chief medical officer for the league, defended the Eagles medical staff.

Goodell explained that medical evaluations took place and proper steps were taken. "The protocols were followed. Our process is to make sure that's the case, and our chief medical officer has gone through that, so we're comfortable that what we've seen in the protocols have happened," Goodell said Wednesday.
