A special tribute after a historic win

On June 13, the New York Knicks won their first championship in over a half century. Star point guard Jalen Brunson scored 45 points in the victory that clinched the title.

After the game, celebrations filled the streets. Vance and Yvonne Bradford, two long time fans living in Brooklyn, were expecting a baby boy around that time. When they opened their windows after Game 5, they heard fans shouting chants of "Knicks in five! Knicks in five!" right outside.

Choosing the name Knickson Fyve

Vance explained that many fans were joking on social media about naming children Jalen, KAT, or OG. The joke was not far from reality. Data shows 32 babies were named Jalen in New York City between March and early October, up from 15 in the same period last year.

The morning after Game 5, Yvonne asked Vance what he thought of the name Knickson, which is pronounced like Nixon. Two days later, she suggested going further with Knickson Fyve. Vance took a split second to make sure she was not joking, then agreed immediately.

Meaning behind the choice

Vance is from Bed Stuy and Yvonne is from Crown Heights. Seeing their childhood team hoist the trophy for the first time in Vance's lifetime was special. Vance said the championship changed the behavior of the city in a positive way.

He added that he expects Knickson might end up in a classroom with other children named after players like Jalen or Karl Anthony in a few years.
