Injury Blow for the Jets
The New York Jets have suffered another major setback to their receiving group. Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell has been ruled inactive for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. Mitchell is sidelined due to a finger injury.
This is a big blow for the offense. Mitchell is the team's top vertical threat. He has been targeted 15 times, which is a team high. From those targets, he has caught nine passes for 123 yards.
The injury happened during Thursday's practice session. Mitchell caught his finger in a teammate's jersey. He was limited in practice on Friday and was initially listed as questionable. Coach Aaron Glenn stated that the finger is not fractured. However, Mitchell was seen on Friday with a heavy wrap on his right hand, with his index and middle fingers in splints.
New Faces in the Lineup
With Mitchell ruled out, Garrett Wilson and Isaiah Williams will start as the top two wide receivers against the Lions. The Jets have had to promote three backup receivers to the active roster this week to fill the gaps. None of these three players were on the roster when the season started.
Veteran Sterling Shepard leads this backup group. Shepard only joined the team's practice squad two weeks ago. The other two backups are Malik McClain and Jamaal Pritchett. McClain is an undrafted rookie, and Pritchett is a first-year player. Both of them will make their NFL debut in Sunday's game.
The Jets are also dealing with other injuries on offense. Starting tight end Mason Taylor is out of the game due to a thumb injury. This leaves the team even shorter on passing options.
