Neville Fumes at Lack of Effort
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has heavily criticized the team's performance in their 1-1 draw against Fulham. Neville described a 15-minute period in the second half as absolutely pathetic and the worst he has seen in more than 45 years of watching the club.
He was particularly angry with the players' lack of work rate during the match at Craven Cottage. Neville explained that his anger came from the fact that the players were simply walking around the pitch instead of working hard.
He compared the players to mannequins, saying they showed no alertness and were not on their toes. Neville added that not running is the only thing he would call a disgrace.
Own Goal Disaster and Late Rescue
Manchester United struggled during a lethargic start to the second half, which led to a bizarre own goal in the 63rd minute. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens fumbled a weak shot with his legs, and defender Lisandro Martínez then tucked the ball past him as the keeper struggled to find his balance.
United managed to salvage a point late in the game. Matheus Cunha scored a deflected effort to secure the 1-1 draw, sparing some of his teammates' embarrassment.
Despite saving a point, the performance left Neville questioning manager Michael Carrick. Neville said Carrick must stop defending his players, even though he understands the manager's loyalty. He warned that playing attacking players might end up hurting Carrick defensively.
Poor Start to the Season
The draw means Manchester United are now without a win in three Premier League matches. They will spend the upcoming international break in the bottom half of the table.
This start represents United's joint-lowest points tally after five matches in the Premier League era. The only other time they had such a poor start was during the 2014-15 season under Louis van Gaal.
During that campaign, the team won only one of their opening five matches, which was a 4-0 home victory against QPR. However, they recovered well to finish fourth that year, a target Carrick will hope to replicate.
