A New NBA Investor

Two time NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has officially become a shareholder in Atlético Madrid. The Spanish football club announced the partnership on Thursday, welcoming the Oklahoma City Thunder guard to their ownership group.

Atlético stated that their connection with the 28 year old player is grounded in shared values like ambition, excellence, and hard work. The club has been majority owned by the US based fund Apollo Global Management since last year.

Joining Basketball Peers

Gilgeous-Alexander expressed his excitement about joining the ownership group. He noted that the club has a long standing presence at the top of European football and thanked them for the opportunity to be part of their future.

While the exact size of the Canadian player's stake was not disclosed, he joins other prominent NBA players such as LeBron James and Kevin Durant who have also invested in football teams.

Club Background

Atlético Madrid currently sits second in LaLiga. They are recognized as one of Spain's most successful teams, having secured LaLiga titles in 2014 and 2021 under the guidance of current coach Diego Simeone.

Gilgeous-Alexander won the 2025 NBA finals and earned MVP honors, followed by his second MVP title the next year. He was also seen wearing an Atlético tracksuit earlier this year before officially taking his stake.
