NBA Referees Order Strict Crackdown on Illegal Arm Push Offs

New Rules for Offensive Fouls

The NBA has instructed referees to crack down on offensive players using their arms to push off against defenders during the upcoming season. James Jones, the executive vice president of basketball operations, explained that the league issued new guidance on four types of calls that happen often and have a major impact on matches.

The push off usually happens when a ballhandler uses his free arm to hit or shove a defender to create space for a shot. The league wants to balance the contest between attack and defence during an era of high scoring, with teams averaging 115.6 points per game last season.

How the Four Fs Standard Works

Referees will judge push off situations using four key words: feeling, firming, force and full extension. A player is allowed to use an arm to feel where a defender is standing or to firm up his own position.

However, referees must blow the whistle if the attacker uses force or fully extends his arm to gain an advantage. Monty McCutchen, the senior vice president of referee development and training, said officials must protect defenders from illegal offensive moves.

The league highlighted video examples to show the difference. One play featured Jaylen Brown pushing his forearm into Kelly Oubre, while another showed RJ Barrett forcefully shoving Evan Mobley backward on a drive to the basket. By contrast, the famous 1998 Finals shot by Michael Jordan over Bryon Russell would still be legal, as Jordan did not use clear force or fully extend his arm.

Other Areas Referees Will Watch

Referees will also keep a close eye on other common actions during games. Officials have been told to monitor illegal contact during screens, such as offensive players shoving their opponents.

Defenders who grab or hold players off the ball will also face strict penalties. In addition, the league clarified rules on straight line pathway plays toward the basket. Both offensive and defensive players have the right to their direct path, and anyone who steps out of their way to bump an opponent off course will be penalised.
