The controversial play

During Wednesday night's game between Minnesota and the Miami Heat, LaMelo Ball made a three-pointer in the second quarter. The shot broke a 39-39 tie. Video clips of the play quickly spread online because of how many steps Ball took before shooting.

The association that represents NBA referees reviewed the play and posted a clarification. The referees confirmed that Ball committed a violation. He gathered with his right foot on the floor and took four steps instead of the two steps permitted by the rule.

Family reactions

Even family members noticed the obvious mistake. Lonzo Ball, a seven-year NBA player and brother to LaMelo, posted on social media moments after the play to call it out.

During a post-game interview, a reporter told LaMelo Ball that his brother had called the travel. Ball was making his Minnesota debut in this game. He insisted he did not commit a violation and joked that his brother was just hating.

Game outcome

Despite the missed call, the extra three points did not heavily alter the final result. Minnesota went on to secure a 131-106 victory over Miami. LaMelo Ball finished his debut performance with 21 points.
