Long road back to the field

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Mykel Williams is ready for his 2026 debut on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. This comes a little less than a year after he tore his ACL and suffered meniscus damage in his right knee during a game against the New York Giants on November 2, 2025.

Coach Kyle Shanahan announced that the team will activate Williams from the physically unable to perform list on Saturday. Williams returned to practice last week and has put in two strong weeks of preparation.

Overcoming the injury layoff

The rookie season for Williams ended after just nine games. During that time, he posted 20 tackles and a sack while averaging 45 snaps per game. Teammate Nick Bosa helped him through the tough recovery process because Bosa was going through a similar experience.

Williams stated that he returned leaner and quicker. Watching the first four games from the sidelines proved difficult as the team dealt with multiple defensive injuries. To clear a roster spot for Williams, the Niners released defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo on Friday.

Ready for full action

Shanahan confirmed that Williams will not face specific workload limitations in his return. When he is on the field, he will be full go, though the coaching staff will monitor how the game goes.

While Williams steps back into the rotation, the team remains without several injured players, including Nick Bosa and James Thompson. Meanwhile, wide receiver Mike Evans is healthy and cleared to play against the Seahawks.
