Late Mbappé Winner
Real Madrid picked up a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in Sunday's Clásico at Camp Nou. The result cuts the gap at the top of the LaLiga table to three points.
Kylian Mbappé scored both goals for Madrid. He opened the scoring in the 41st minute when Barcelona defender Gerard Martín tried to clear the ball, but it bounced off Mbappé and went into the net.
Raphinha equalized for the home side. Mbappé then scored the winning goal in the 87th minute, finishing off a counterattack created by substitute Eduardo Camavinga. The strike marked Mbappé 100th goal for Real Madrid. This victory was the fifth win in a row for Madrid across all competitions.
League Title Remains Main Goal
Speaking after the match, manager José Mourinho insisted that his squad must stay focused. He explained that winning at Camp Nou means little if they drop points in their upcoming games.
Mourinho stated that Real Madrid play to win the league, not just to win at Camp Nou. He added that he will not let anyone have their head in the clouds when they get back to work.
The manager pointed out that they must stay grounded ahead of their next match away at Racing Santander at El Sardinero. Mourinho praised his team for playing an extraordinary game with courage, focus, and strong organization against a tough opponent.
Squad Strength Tested
Real Madrid faced Barcelona without primary goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who missed the game due to the flu. Reserve goalkeeper Andriy Lunin started in his place.
Mourinho shared that he told Lunin before the match that he trains to play rather than sit on the bench. He noted that while Courtois is the best keeper in the world, the team did not cry about his absence because the squad is strong.
The manager also praised captain Federico Valverde, who suffered an injury early in the match. Valverde played through the pain for over 40 minutes to support the team. Mourinho stated that Valverde wanted to go to the limit and gave everything on the field.
