Defending Mbappe
Jose Mourinho has called criticism of Kylian Mbappe ridiculous and defended the Real Madrid star's conduct during the international break. Mbappe picked up an injury in his first game on duty with France on Sept. 25, and then drew criticism for trips to Paris and Switzerland during his recovery. This included posting a video of himself riding a bicycle on social media.
Speaking in a news conference on Friday, Mourinho said it is ridiculous to exaggerate the behavior of the player. He noted that players who were injured came straight to Valdebebas for their diagnosis and rehab plan. Mbappe got his diagnosis, went to an external consultant with total agreement from Real Madrid, and followed the proper steps. Mourinho explained that the trip to Paris was for a private event at a transformed club, while the stay in Switzerland involved a hotel with little houses and bikes to reach restaurants and the spa.
Team News and Standings
Real Madrid go into Saturday's game at the Bernabéu six points behind leaders Barcelona in the table. They face a demanding October fixture list that culminates in El Clásico at Camp Nou on Oct. 25.
Mourinho also suggested there was a coordinated campaign by elements in the media to have fans whistle Mbappe during the Villarreal game. He promised that when a Real Madrid player fails to behave properly, that player will not be on the bench. Because Mbappe is starting, Mourinho is sure the forward has not failed his obligations to the club. The coach also admitted that Vinícius Júnior has not reached his best form this season and said he was hurt by fan criticism of the player.
