The Current Situation
The Milwaukee Brewers recently celebrated the first World Series title in franchise history to end the season. Now, the sport enters the offseason under a dark cloud because the current collective bargaining agreement is set to expire on December 1. With no sign of a new labor agreement between the league and the Major League Baseball Players Association, a lockout appears to be imminent.
The Latest Proposals
Major League Baseball made the first proposal of the offseason. The league proposed postponing the implementation of a salary cap until the 2028 season while putting other elements of its labor offer into place for 2027. The league set a proposed cap of $258.2 million and a floor of $180.2 million for 2028. This follows previous figures of a $245.3 million ceiling and $171.2 million floor.
What Happens Next
The current agreement runs out at 11:59 p.m. on December 1. If sides do not agree before then, owners could lock out the players right away, shutting down league business. This would mean players cannot contact coaches or use team facilities until a new agreement is reached. Free agency is expected to see a lot of activity before the deadline as teams and players try to make deals.
Key Figures in Talks
Rob Manfred will set the tone for the league as commissioner. Dan Halem serves as chief negotiator, alongside Morgan Sword and Glen Caplin. For the players, Bruce Meyer leads the union as interim executive director. He works alongside legal team members Matt Nussbaum, Jeff Perconte, and Ian Penny, plus player representatives on the executive subcommittee.
