Small Markets Meet In World Series
The Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays are competing in this year's World Series. It is the first time since 2015 that a small market team will win the championship. This is Milwaukee's first World Series appearance in 44 years.
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said having two smaller market teams in the final is good for the sport. However, he argued that it shows why baseball needs a salary cap. Manfred said that the Brewers have been a well run team for a long time, but waiting 40 years to reach the final is not enough for smaller markets.
Union Responds To Cap Demands
Bruce Meyer, the interim executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, disputed the idea that a cap levels the field. He pointed out that any team can accomplish what Milwaukee and Tampa Bay did this year.
Meyer admitted that teams cannot win in the long term if they stop spending on players. Still, he stated that a salary cap tells teams they cannot compete too much. He claimed that owners really want a cap to increase profits and raise franchise values.
Impasse Could Lead To Lockout
The current collective bargaining agreement expires at the end of next month. Manfred insisted that data over the last two decades shows a clear relationship between market size, payroll, and playoff success. He said larger markets have a big advantage when trying to reach and advance in the playoffs.
Manfred stated that team owners have total agreement on wanting a cap so they can operate like other major sports leagues in North America. Meyer replied that owners are choosing to push for a lockout.
If neither side backs down, a work stoppage will begin in December. Players will have no contact with their teams, and all league business will stop. The standoff could stretch into the new year and affect the upcoming season.
