Mitchell's Big Plays
Garrett Mitchell was the hero of the night as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 on Wednesday. The victory ended the best of five Division Series in four games. It also sent the Brewers to the National League Championship Series for the second year in a row.
Mitchell did it all for Milwaukee. He drove in Sal Frelick for the team's first run in the third inning. In the fifth, Mitchell hit a triple and scored the tiebreaking run.
His most important play came in the eighth inning. Manny Machado hit a deep 406 foot drive off reliever Abner Uribe. Mitchell tracked the ball to the wall in right center and made a catch just above the wall to save a home run. Second baseman Brice Turang then ended the eighth inning with another great catch on a popup by Ty France.
Records Broken
The Brewers snapped a 12 game postseason road losing streak with the win. They won using their usual formula of excellent pitching and defense. Four Milwaukee pitchers combined to throw a three hitter.
Starter Robert Gasser threw four innings. He allowed only three hits, though one was a 429 foot home run by San Diego's Fernando Tatis Jr. in the third inning.
At just 22 years old, Jackson Chourio became the Brewers' career leader in postseason RBI. He drove in Mitchell in the fifth inning to reach 17 career postseason RBI, passing Ryan Braun. Chourio has six RBI in this series alone. Later in the sixth, Jake Bauers singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Frelick to make it 3-1.
The 103 win Brewers will now face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS. The Dodgers swept Milwaukee last October, so the Brewers will look for revenge when Game 1 starts on Sunday.
