A Historic Postseason Performance
Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Aaron Ashby created history on Tuesday night during Game 4 of the World Series in St. Petersburg. He set a new record for the most consecutive scoreless innings by a relief pitcher in a single postseason.
Ashby pitched a clean ninth inning to break the previous record set by Andrew Miller. He continued his dominant run by throwing a perfect tenth inning and retiring his first batter in the eleventh.
The reliever has now pitched 18 scoreless innings across nine playoff games this year. He has allowed just five hits and three walks while striking out 20 batters during this October run.
Late Drama Costs Milwaukee
Despite Ashby making history, the Brewers could not finish the job. Milwaukee was just three outs away from securing their first championship before their bullpen struggled in extra innings.
Rookie Cooper Pratt put Milwaukee ahead 3-2 with a solo home run at the top of the twelfth inning. However, the team could not hold onto the lead in the bottom half of the frame.
Third baseman Joey Ortiz made a throwing error on a Junior Caminero grounder with Antonio Senzatela pitching. Rookie Shane Drohan then came on and gave up three straight singles to Liam Hicks, Jonny DeLuca and Ben Williamson. The Rays won 4-3 to avoid a series sweep.
Overcoming Past Playoff Struggles
Ashby reached a career high of 22 and two thirds consecutive scoreless innings when counting his final regular season games. The previous postseason record belonged to Andrew Miller, who threw 16 scoreless relief innings for Cleveland in 2016.
This remarkable form is a major change from Ashby's past playoff performances. In his previous postseason appearances across 2021, 2024 and 2025, he allowed nine runs over nine and one third innings.
He was reliable all through the regular season for Milwaukee. Ashby posted a 13-3 record with a 3.12 ERA over 71 relief outings before delivering his record breaking performance.
