End Of An Era For Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Dodgers saw their quest for a third straight title come to an end on Thursday night. Milwaukee completed a sweep in the National League Championship Series with a 6-4 victory.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts admitted his team was beaten across the board. "At the end of the day, we got beat," Roberts said. "We got outplayed in all facets."
Shortstop Miguel Rojas announced his retirement as a player shortly after the defeat. He stayed in his uniform for over an hour after the final out and is expected to move into a front office role.
How The Final Game Unfolded
Los Angeles took an early four run lead in the second inning when Shohei Ohtani hit a 428 foot home run. It was his first home run since Aug. 18.
Milwaukee fought back using doubles, steals, hits, and five walks. Garrett Mitchell then hit a home run off reliever Tanner Scott to put the Brewers ahead for good.
The Dodgers failed to answer back, missing several chances late in the game. They had doubles in the sixth and seventh innings and a triple in the eighth, but failed to score a single run in those frames.
Offense Struggles At The Worst Time
The Dodgers won 100 games during the regular season and claimed their 13th division title in 14 years. However, their bats went cold against Milwaukee.
Los Angeles produced a .520 OPS during the series and went just 4-for-27 with runners in scoring position.
Ohtani struggled throughout the postseason while dealing with left knee and right bicep injuries. He batted .192 in the playoffs and acknowledged that the Brewers exposed parts of his game.
Uncertainty Ahead For Dodgers
This defeat marks a stark contrast to last year, when Los Angeles dominated Milwaukee by a total score of 15-4 in a sweep. This time, the Brewers applied constant pressure that the Dodgers could not handle.
Third baseman Max Muncy expressed his disappointment after the loss. "The train finally ran out of steam, I guess," Muncy said.
With a looming lockout and potential salary restrictions on the horizon, the Dodgers face an uncertain future as they prepare for next season.
