An unexpected birthday call
Mike Pettine was traveling through Italy, celebrating his 60th birthday when he got a call from Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker a few weeks ago seeing if he would take a role on the staff. Pettine said he answered the call because Parker is a friend in need.
Pettine is finishing his first week as a senior defensive assistant. The two men previously worked together when Pettine brought Parker into the NFL as a quality control coach with the Green Bay Packers in 2018.
A wealth of experience
Pettine has 24 years of NFL experience, including three defensive coordinator stops with the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and Green Bay Packers. He also had a two-year run as head coach of the Cleveland Browns and spent the previous four seasons as assistant head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.
Parker is in his first year as a coordinator and has just eight years of NFL experience. Pettine mentioned he has a large book of what not to do and aims to help Parker avoid mistakes. Pettine will be in the coaches booth during games while Parker remains on the sideline.
Fixing the defense
Through five games, the Cowboys are 31st in yards allowed per game and 25th in points per game. The unit has not recorded an interception and has put up just five sacks.
Pettine has spent most of his time in the film room studying personnel and scheme. He noted that football is a game of a million little things and the plan needs to highlight what the team does well while taking away what the opponent does well.
