Evans shines in tight win
Mike Evans delivered a massive performance on Sunday to help the San Francisco 49ers stay unbeaten with a 32-29 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Evans recorded seven catches, 113 yards and one touchdown in the match.
San Francisco now sits at 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the NFC West. After Seattle beat the 49ers twice at the end of last season, including a 41-6 win in the divisional round, San Francisco brought in Evans during free agency. Coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that this performance was exactly why they signed the veteran wide receiver.
Big drive late in the game
San Francisco struggled on offense through three quarters, picking up just 159 yards. All of their early 21 points came from defensive plays or turnovers. Trailing 26-21 late in the game, quarterback Brock Purdy turned to Evans, who was playing through a painful rib injury for the second straight week.
Evans pulled in several big passes on a key fourth quarter drive, including a 23 yard completion on third down and a 28 yard gain on second down. That setup a seven yard touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks, followed by a two point conversion catch by Evans to take a 29-26 lead.
During the match, Evans also scored his 112th career touchdown. That moved him past Tony Gonzalez and into a tie with Shaun Alexander for 19th place on the all time NFL scoring list.
Historical start for San Francisco
This is the third time San Francisco has started 5-0 under Shanahan since 2017. In both previous seasons, the team won the NFC West and reached the Super Bowl. They are also just the second team in league history to start 5-0 with three wins against teams that won 12 or more games in the previous season.
