A Moment Of Truth For Carrick
Michael Carrick got a big Champions League win against Roma, ending a nine game run without a victory. But the Manchester United manager knows big decisions are coming very soon. The current situation cannot go on forever, and a change will happen one way or another.
The test comes this Sunday when Aston Villa visit Old Trafford. A win could start a good run of form for United. A defeat would wipe out the good feeling from the Roma comeback. If Villa win and other results go against United, the club could end Sunday night at the bottom of the table.
Board Support And Manager Options
An international break follows the Villa game before United play Liverpool on Nov. 22. Club bosses Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox backed Carrick after a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth on Oct. 25. Fans supported Carrick after that game and pointed their anger at the players instead.
However, the board accepts that you cannot replace an entire squad. United bosses looked at several coaching candidates before giving Carrick a two year contract in May. They also have files on managers interviewed in summer 2024. While they prefer to keep Carrick, options are being discussed if results do not improve.
Money Problems And Transfers
Carrick won 12 out of 17 games from January to May, but his record since then is 3-14. Fans point to a difficult summer transfer window. United wanted more signings, but funds were tight.
The initial £120 million budget was pushed to £155 million to bring in Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba. United later reported a £43 million loss in September. Meanwhile, the club spent £63.5 million to buy land for a planned 100,000 seat stadium, which has angered supporters who wanted new defenders or strikers instead.
High Stakes At Old Trafford
Club leaders believe the proposed stadium will help solve long term financial issues, but United face serious short term problems on the pitch. Relegation concerns are real if form does not pick up.
Carrick needs his team to show the same energy they had in the second half against Roma. Sunday night could decide whether Carrick stays in charge or if United make a manager change during the international break.
