A Tough Second Half in Santa Clara
The Miami Dolphins are back home after a rough two-game road trip to start the season. Their latest outing ended in a 35-13 defeat against the San Francisco 49ers. After a competitive first half that left Miami trailing 14-6, things fell apart quickly after halftime.
San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy opened the second half with a 40-yard pass to George Kittle, which led to a touchdown. The 49ers scored touchdowns on their first five possessions of the game. Miami coach Jeff Hafley called the game a tale of two halves, admitting his team did not play or coach well enough in the second half.
Youth and Experience Tell the Story
The gap in experience between the two teams was obvious. The Dolphins are the youngest team in the league, while the 49ers are the second-oldest. Seven of the ten players who played the most defensive snaps for Miami have less than two years of NFL experience.
Purdy dominated the game, finishing with three touchdowns and only two incomplete passes. Miami did find a late highlight when quarterback Malik Willis threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Miller. It was Willis's first touchdown pass of the year, but he was not in the mood to celebrate. Willis said he felt good for his teammate but not for the team, as it did not help them win.
Linebacker Jordyn Brooks was more optimistic about the learning opportunity. He noted that playing a championship team so early in the season helps young players grow. Brooks said that losses show the true character of the squad, and he was pleased that the team kept fighting until the end.
