No Excuses After Late Flag
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay made it clear his team will not blame officiating for their 30-26 loss to the Denver Broncos. The Rams dropped to 1-2 on the season after a late defensive pass interference call went against cornerback Josh Wallace on a third down play.
Wallace appeared to intercept Denver quarterback Bo Nix, but officials flagged him for contact on wide receiver Pat Bryant. The penalty handed Denver a fresh set of downs at the Rams 7 yard line, leading to the winning touchdown with 47 seconds left on the clock. McVay said that while he had no coaching corrections for Wallace, he will not play the victim card because the team had multiple opportunities to close out the game.
Late Penalties and Injury Problems
The Rams struggled with late discipline, picking up five penalties in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter. It proved costly in a tight contest where referee Bill Vinovich and his crew had rarely thrown late flags in previous seasons.
Injuries also hit the roster hard. Cornerback Jaylen Watson suffered a dislocated arm late in the second quarter and is likely to sit out Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles, though the team does not plan to place him on injured reserve. Tight end Terrance Ferguson will also likely miss the game with a sprained ankle, while tight end Colby Parkinson sprained his AC joint. Wide receiver Puka Nacua could return from a groin injury after completing a positive pregame workout.
