Record Breaking Night
The Carolina Panthers evened their record at 2-2 on Sunday night after a 36-32 win over the Detroit Lions. Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan delivered a dominant performance with 14 catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Bryce Young threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns, leading the offense on six scoring drives. McMillan accounted for 43.1 percent of the net offense for Carolina.
With Jalen Coker sidelined by a quad injury and Xavier Legette on injured reserve, McMillan stepped up in a big way. He set new career highs across the board, including 16 targets. He fell just one catch and nine receiving yards short of tying two franchise records.
Strong Connection With Young
Coach Dave Canales noted that Young and McMillan did not have a great week of practice, but their connection on Sunday night was strong. Young now holds a franchise record with nine passing touchdowns through the first four games of the season. Young and offensive coordinator Brad Idzik have guided the offense to 22 scoring drives in four games, which is the most for the franchise since 2000.
McMillan praised Idzik for his collaborative approach and communication throughout the week. Lions coach Dan Campbell admitted that his team knew McMillan would be a major focus of the offense, especially with other receivers injured. Tight end Tommy Tremble expressed happiness for McMillan, stating that it was fun to see him display his high caliber of play on Sunday Night Football.
Following Club History
McMillan joined rare company with his performance against Detroit. He became only the second player in Panthers history to record 175 or more receiving yards and two touchdowns in a single game. Steve Smith Sr. previously managed 178 yards and two touchdowns in Week 1 of the 2011 season against the Arizona Cardinals.
Following the win, McMillan mentioned that he felt the trust of both Young and Idzik throughout the contest. As he looks to build on his strong rookie season, McMillan is currently on pace to surpass his numbers from last year.
