A Shocking Opener
The Los Angeles Chargers started their season with a disappointing 26-14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel admitted the performance was shocking. He explained that after working for months on a new vision for the team, the actual game looked nothing like what he expected.
Quarterback Justin Herbert struggled to find his rhythm. He finished the game with 209 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The offense looked disjointed and uncomfortable throughout the match. Despite the poor start, McDaniel insisted he is not worried. He noted that Herbert is already far ahead of where most quarterbacks are during their first year in a new system.
Mistakes and Injuries
There were major issues on the field, especially during the second to last drive. The Chargers committed three consecutive penalties. Wide receiver Quentin Johnston and center Jake Slaughter both had false starts, and Slaughter followed with a holding penalty. This left the team facing a second and 30 situation, which McDaniel described as the most unacceptable part of the game.
Injuries also affected the team. Wide receiver Ladd McConkey was a bright spot, catching five passes for 82 yards and a touchdown. However, he left the game in the third quarter with a rib injury. McConkey missed practice on Wednesday and had to work with a trainer on Thursday.
On the final drive, Herbert was sacked after two defenders came through unblocked. McDaniel explained that Herbert calls the line protections, which is by design. He praised Herbert, saying he is a master at changing protections compared to other quarterbacks he has coached.
