Ready for the Etihad Challenge

RB Leipzig defender Maxime Esteve hopes to make his Champions League debut on Wednesday when his side takes on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The 24 year old French centre back joined the German club from Burnley for 25 million euros in the summer.

He has played four times in the Bundesliga so far. However, he has been an unused substitute in all three Champions League matches this season. He missed the last two matches after receiving a knock against Elversberg. Now, Esteve says he is fully recovered and ready whenever the coach needs him.

Plan to Stop Haaland

If he gets the nod, Esteve faces the task of marking Erling Haaland. The Norwegian forward already has 13 goals in all competitions this season. Esteve previously played against him twice during his spell in England.

Esteve described Haaland as the best striker in the world alongside Harry Kane. He explained that Haaland stays patient while teammates like Rayan Cherki work in small spaces. He warned that defenders must stay focused for the whole game because Haaland can score in a single second.

Lessons from City Legends

The defender has learned from former Manchester City players Vincent Kompany and Martin Demichelis. Kompany coached him at Burnley, while Demichelis took charge of Leipzig in June. Esteve praised both young managers for their competitive drive and intensity in training.

Both coaches set high standards, staying late and showing hunger even in small practice games. Esteve says training under them has prepared him for the highest level.

Putting the Past Behind Him

A starting role would also give Esteve the chance to erase a difficult memory. Playing for Burnley at the Etihad in September 2025, he scored two own goals during a 5-1 defeat.

His manager at the time, Scott Parker, told him to forget about the incident. Esteve now looks forward to helping Leipzig reach the next stage of the competition while maintaining their top standard in Germany.
