Trusting the Process
Arizona Cardinals receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. is not letting a slow start to his third season get to him. Through his first two games, Harrison has recorded just one catch for 33 yards on four targets. Despite these low numbers, he remains highly confident in his abilities.
Harrison explained that his belief comes from his daily preparation rather than his game results. He prepares the same way every week, which includes catching balls off the Jugs machine in the morning and after practice. He said his process will not change whether he gets zero catches or 10 catches in a game.
Blocking Out the Noise
With high expectations on his shoulders, Harrison admitted he sees the negative comments on social media but tries to block them out. He said he is not surprised by the reaction because people expect high production from him after he was drafted by the team.
His teammates and coaches are fully backing him. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett said nobody has lost confidence in the receiver. Brissett, an 11 year veteran, has been talking with Harrison to help him through the early stretch. Wide receiver Michael Wilson also defended Harrison, saying people are overreacting to a very small sample size of games. Coach Mike LaFleur added that Harrison is still the same person inside the team facility and continues to work hard every day.
A Combination of Factors
The slow start is due to a combination of factors. Brissett pointed out that many things need to go right for a deep pass play to work, including protection, coverage, the route, and the throw itself. Harrison agreed, saying it is never the fault of just one person when things do not go well.
The defenses they faced also played a major role. In the game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Harrison faced single coverage on only seven of his 32 routes. Their next opponent, the Seattle Seahawks, is one of the top defensive units in the league. Brissett also noted that the outside noise is unjustified, pointing out that the team signed Mike for 25 million dollars and nobody complained when he had only two catches.
