Post match anger
Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has issued a formal apology after criticising the club board following a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The Argentina defender took aim at director of football Jason Wilcox during his post match interviews. He also suggested that head coach Michael Carrick has been let down by a lack of summer signings.
Positive talks
United leaders, including Wilcox and Carrick, met with Martinez at the club training ground on Thursday. The twenty eight year old then released a statement on social media to apologise for his comments.
Today I met with the club leadership and the manager, Martinez said. It was a very positive conversation, where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday game. Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity. The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise.
Moving forward
United have chosen not to confirm whether Martinez has been disciplined for his outburst, although sources have indicated that he has been fined. The club considers the matter closed.
Martinez is set to be available to face Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday if he is selected by the manager.
