Maresca Wants More Goals Beyond Haaland

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca says his team must find goals from other players and not just depend on Erling Haaland.

Goals Needed Across the Team

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca believes his team must not rely entirely on Erling Haaland for goals. Haaland has scored 13 times across all competitions this season, but failed to find the net in a 1-0 defeat against Brighton on Saturday. That loss knocked City off the top of the Premier League standings.

Speaking on Tuesday in Germany ahead of a Champions League match against RB Leipzig, Maresca explained that other players need to start contributing to the scoresheet. He stated that having Haaland on the pitch is great because he always gets close to scoring, but the rest of the squad must also step up.

Phil Foden Finding His Rhythm

Phil Foden is showing signs of returning to his best form after a hat trick against AEK Athens in the Champions League. Foden faced challenges recently, including missing out on the England squad for the World Cup following two indifferent seasons, and serving a domestic suspension earlier this term for a red card against Manchester United.

Foden admitted that the break did him good and helped him return fresh and sharp. He noted that he has been involved in many goals lately and feels happy with his performances. Despite his recent improvement, Foden started on the bench for City in their last two Premier League matches.

Managing a Long Season

Maresca defended his team selection by pointing to the depth of the squad. He mentioned that City has 20 very good senior players and strong competition for places. He described the campaign as a marathon rather than a sprint.

The manager emphasized the importance of keeping all players available and fit as the season reaches the later months of February, March, and April. Meanwhile, Foden remains focused on his club performances while keeping hopes alive for a future international recall under England manager Thomas Tuchel.
