Maresca Backs Donnarumma Despite Heroic Cup Display From Rulli

Maresca backs Donnarumma despite Rulli heroics

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca insists Gianluigi Donnarumma remains his top goalkeeper. Second choice goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli saved two penalties during a Carabao Cup victory over Brighton on Wednesday, but Maresca cleared up any debate over who holds the starting spot.

Donnarumma was one of five players given a short break by Maresca this week. Rulli took his place and put in a strong performance, saving spot kicks from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk after the game ended 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium. City went on to win the shootout 4-3.

Maresca stated clearly that Rulli understands his position in the squad. He said there is no doubt about Donnarumma keeping his spot in the team despite recent questions over the Italian form.

City battle back to earn cup progress

Brighton made life difficult for City in the cup match. Malick Yalcoye gave the visitors the lead before Mateo Kovacic brought City level. Brighton took the lead again through Georginio Rutter, who also hit the side netting and saw another effort tipped onto the crossbar by Rulli.

City turned the match around after substitute Jeremy Doku entered the field. Rayan Cherki took a free kick that deflected off Vitor Reis and into the net to make it 2-2.

Kovacic missed his penalty in the shootout, but Rulli made two key saves to send City into the quarter finals, where they will face Bradford City.

Full strength teams expected for league rematch

City are currently top of the Premier League table. Maresca expects another tough challenge when Brighton return to the Etihad Stadium this Saturday for a league fixture. Both teams made a combined 16 changes for the midweek cup clash, but both managers are expected to field full strength lineups this weekend.

Maresca praised Brighton style of play, noting that Fabian Hurzeler team scores many goals and always plays on the front foot.
