A special venue for Mariota

Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota could be set to start this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. Regular starter Jayden Daniels was limited in practice on Wednesday because of a dislocated left elbow. This gives Mariota a chance to step up.

If Mariota starts, it will be a very special moment for him. The game is being played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. This will be the third iconic soccer stadium Mariota has started a football game in during his career.

He previously started at Wembley Stadium in 2019 while playing for the Tennessee Titans, where he lost to the Los Angeles Chargers. Last season, he started at the Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid, losing to the Miami Dolphins in overtime. Despite those losses, he is excited for another chance. He said playing at Wembley, Madrid, and now Tottenham is a cool moment that he is looking forward to.

How soccer helps his game

Mariota played soccer as a child before focusing on American football. He believes the skills he learned on the soccer pitch still help him avoid defenders and make plays today. He is known for his elusive runs and his ability to spin out of tough situations in the pocket.

He explained that soccer helped his spatial awareness as a quarterback. In soccer, you have to know your next move before the ball even comes to you. He feels this taught him how to see the field and diagnose where to put the ball. He also credits soccer for his quick footwork when taking his drops.

Mariota does not have a favorite soccer team, but his brother Matt is a big Liverpool fan who even played some college football in England. Mariota is coming off a strong performance in a 33-31 win over Seattle, where he threw for 176 yards and three touchdowns. The Commanders currently have a record of one win and two losses.
