LAFC Part Ways With Dos Santos
LAFC have dismissed head coach Marc Dos Santos on Sunday night following a disappointing run of results. General manager John Thorrington announced the decision but has not named an immediate replacement.
Dos Santos was hired just nine months ago to succeed Steve Cherundolo. He previously served as Cherundolo's assistant for four seasons and had a stint managing the Vancouver Whitecaps. However, his time in charge of the MLS club has been cut short after less than a year.
Slump in Results Costs Coach His Job
The decision to sack Dos Santos came after LAFC suffered a 1-0 defeat away at FC Dallas on Saturday. This loss was the final straw for the club hierarchy, who have watched the team win just one of their last nine matches across all competitions.
Since July, LAFC have registered a poor record of one win, four losses, and five draws in MLS matches. Despite having a talented squad that includes star players like Son Heung-Min and Denis Bouanga, the team has struggled to find consistency. LAFC currently sit sixth in the Western Conference standings with a record of 11-9-8.
Supporters have also grown frustrated with the manager. Dos Santos faced criticism from fans for his static tactics and substitution choices, with the team even being booed by their own supporters during recent home games at BMO Stadium.
Looking Ahead to the Final Six Games
Dos Santos was only the third head coach in the history of LAFC, which started playing in MLS in 2018. Bob Bradley first established the club as a contender, while Cherundolo led them to the MLS Cup in 2022 and the U.S. Open Cup in 2024 before resigning.
The season started well for Dos Santos with a 3-0 victory over Inter Miami in front of over 75,000 fans. However, the team failed to maintain that momentum. They were knocked out of the CONCACAF Champions League in May and have struggled in the league since.
LAFC now have a break to regroup. Their next match is scheduled for October 10 against Vancouver. The club has six matches remaining in the regular season to secure their playoff position and turn their campaign around.
